When one thinks of Canada, the first thing that may come to one’s mind is the bitterly cold winters, hence deterring many potential immigrants from moving to the Great White North. There is no doubt that the weather plays a key factors in deciding which country one may want chose to immigrate to. And if this week’s plummeting temperatures are anything to go by, the weather has certainly proven Canada to be one of the coldest countries.
According to Environment Canada, this week saw one of the highest, record-breaking snowfalls across the country. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA), known to be the most densely populated city in the country and among the warmest in Canada came to a standstill with heavy snowfall at an average of 40cm with whiteout conditions.
While the Winters are magical but cold, most of the year Canada has perfect weather especially during Spring and Summer. Being active and enjoying winter activities and sports is a great way to stay healthy.
So why shouldn’t the Winter be a deterrent in your immigration decision-making process?
Unbeknown to many foreigners, Canadian homes are architected in a unique way which allows for a central heating system via insulation in-between the dry walls of a home, the windows are double glazed keeping the cold/heat out and the air conditioner conducts through a ducting system that allows the temperature to be constant. It is common for many to be using shorts and short sleeves in your home, even in the depth of Winter while it is -40 outside.
While many of us would like to hibernate through the cold months indoors, at some point we would have to make your way outdoors. While all public transport are heated, the City of Toronto takes it a step further, with Toronto’s extensive PATH system that connects most of Downtown, through a vast underground walkway that allows users to traverse a large portion of the downtown area while staying indoors. According to Guinness World Records, PATH is the largest underground shopping complex with 30 kilometers (19 miles) of shopping, services, and entertainment.
Learning how to adjust to cold conditions so you can enjoy the winter weather is the key to embracing the Winter months in Canada. Getting involved in winter activities can help you to enjoy the colder months. Some activities include:
- Sledding
- Skiing and Snowboarding
- Ice Skating
- Snowshoeing
- Cross Country Skiing
- Ice Fishing
- Snowball Fighting and building snowmen
- Ice Sculpting
Canada is land filled with ample opportunities and possibilities therefore the inclement should not better one from choosing Canada as your country of choice.
